Explanation:

When solution of methyl magnesium iodide (Grignard reagent) in dry ether is added to solid carbon dioxide (dry ice), it gives an adduct (magnesium salt of carboxylic acid), which on acid hydrolysis gives ethanoic acid or acetic acid.

Treating dry ice with methyl magnesium bromide followed by hydrolysis gives acetic acid.

  • The dry ice is solid carbon dioxide.
  • Treating dry ice with Grignard reagent methyl magnesium bromide or MeMgBr followed by hydrolysis by acid or water gives acetic acid.
  • In this reaction at first the methyl ion attack the carbon dioxide carbon atom and in the second step treating with hydrogen ion it produces acetic acid.
  • The reaction is as follows-
  • CO_2+CH_3MgBr\rightarrow CH_3COOMgBr+H_3O^+\rightarrow CH_3COOH.
