Monocotyledons also called monocots, seeds typically contain only one embryonic leaf. They contain one of the major groups into which the angiosperms are traditionally been divided while rest of the angiosperms have 2 cotyledons.
The dicotyledons, also known as dicots are one of the two groups in which all the angiosperms were previously divided. The name refers to one of the differentiable characteristics of the group, namely that the seed has two embryonic leaves. There are around 20000 species within this group.
