Needs & wants have changed drastically throughout the years. In todays society certain things such as cell phones are necessities for work and school, whereas 30 years ago cell phones wouldn't have even been mainstream. The implications of technology in society are most to blame for this change in needs & wants. The way society runs is so different from the way we communicate to our entertainment. Further, in past generations needs & wants were noticably different, where today things such as smart devices can be both a need and want depending on your work.
