Alluvial soil is the most widely spread soil in India. This is also an important soil. The entire northern plains are covered with alluvial soil. This soil is deposited by three himalayan rivers namely :The indus, ganga and brahmaputra. This soil is extended in Rajasthan and Gujarat through a narrow corridor. This soil is also found in the eastern coastal plains. This soil mainly consists of various proportions of sand, silt and clay. Alluvial soil is classified into two on the basis of their age:
1)Older alluvial or bangar
2)Newer alluvial or khadar.
Alluvial soils are very fertile. These soil contains chemical contents like potash, phosphoric acid and lime. These chemical contents are very ideal for the growth of sugarcane, paddy, wheat and other cereal and pulse crops. Regions having alluvial soils are intensively cultivated and densely populated due to it's high fertility.
