NaOH is a strong base there it usually gives double displacement neutralization reaction with acidic compounds. These reactions form salt and water mainly.

For example, reaction of HCl with NaOH forms NaCl and water.

NaOH(s) + HCl(aq) \rightarrow NaCl(aq) + H_2O

In the above, the solid NaOH had to first dissolve - which released heat - and then it neutralized the acid, which released even more heat.
