Answer:You need to respect me because I am older than you.” This is what adults say to teens all the time. Well, this is wrong; teens should respect adults because the adults respect the teens. I believe that respect is a two way street between teens and adults.
Everyone should be treated equal, and this is why you should respect someone if you want them to respect you. It’s the golden rule, “Treat others as you want to be treated.” If you do this, people will respect you not only based on your age or position of power, but because they respect you for you. Adults should realize this most of all, and some of them have. Yet there are still those adults that think that they should just be respected for being older. Well, that used to be the case many decades ago, but know times has changed and teens demand respect also. It’s just that adults aren’t used to the idea of this having to be done. They were always used to just doing as they were told by others, but times have changed.
I had a great social studies teacher my senior year, and the first day of class he went through all the normal beginning of the year stuff, like the syllabus and class rules. At the top of the list of rules there was a very powerful word followed by some other words. It read as follows “Respect- Is a two-way street between students and teacher.” This surprised me, because most other teachers just put respect others and their property, they never put that they too must be respectful. Teachers and adults always expect students to respect them and they never really respect the teens that they talk to.
All teens really want is someone to treat them like adults and show respect for them just like adults want the respect themselves. If adults and teachers took the time to show that they do respect us, I believe that students and teachers would get along a lot better. I think that all teachers should have the rule that my government teacher has. It shows students that he cares enough about them to respect them. That’s all we really want.
I believe that teachers and adults should respect teens in order to get the same respect back. You can ask any student or teen that if they were respected, that they would respect their teachers more. That would make existing together in many environments better for all of us.
