Answer. Given α and β are the zeroes of the polynomial x2 − 7x + k Also given that α − β = 5 → (1) Recall that sum of roots (α + β) = −(b/a) ∴ α + β = 7 → (2) Add (1) and (2), we get α − β = 5 α + β = 7 2α = 12 ∴ α = 6 Put α = 6 in α + β = 7 6 + β = 7 ∴ β = 1 Since 6 and 1 are zeroes of the given polynomial Put x = 1 in the given polynomial to find the value of k x2 − 7x + k ⇒ 12 − 7(1) + k = 0 ⇒ 1 − 7 + k = 0 ⇒ − 6 + k = 0 ∴ k = 6
