Earthworms are excellent decomposers. They help in degrading dead organic matter into fertile manure (rich in carbon and nitrogen).Such earth friendly earthworms are used in compost generally.Such compost were earthworms are used to accelerate the decomposition process is called 'Vermi-compost'.
I will give you the procedure. You'll have to make the compost accordingly and take pictures after every step :)
- Take any old bin or some old big water can to prepare the compost. This will act as a base for your compost apparatus
- Make few small holes so that excessive water can be trained off.
- Add some light material like hay or weed
- Add soil upto 1/3
- Add a small amount of cow dung paste (prepare it by mixing cow dung and water)
- Add a layer of organic waste that needs decomposition
- Add another layer of cow dung mixture. This would make the soil suitable for the survival of the worm
- Add few earthworms depending upon the size of the container
- Cover the entire container with hay or gunny bag.
- Moisten the gunny bag regularly to provide possible atmosphere for the survival of worms
After a month or so the entire vermi-compost will be converted into a fertile manure by the decomposing action of the earthworms.
Remember to :
Not let the compost dry or flood
Have fun and take pictures :)
Earthworms may seem gross, but they actually play an essential role in food chains and ecosystems. Earthworms are decomposers that break down and recycle the matter from dead plants and animals, as well as waste products, returning it back into the soil.
