Instead he took time to consider his problem and was able to outsmart the intruder with his wit. He made up a story that he is also wanted by the police and taking his identity won't help him. He convinced the intruder that there was a hidden door in his cupboard, thus trapping him in the end. Gerrard understood he was overconfident and gullible and used this to his advantage
