Presence of mind and patience are two of those values that help a person in time of adversity. Gerrard could  have panicked  and surrendered to the intruder because of his helplessness. Instead he took time to consider his problem and was able to outsmart the intruder with his wit. He made up a story that he is also wanted by the police and taking his identity won't help him. He convinced the intruder that there was a hidden door in his cupboard, thus trapping him in the end. Gerrard understood he was overconfident and gullible and used this to his advantage
