What do you do if your fellow traveler in your flight is about to die due to the lack of a proper medical equipment?
People in Bollywood movies would put together a mechanical contraption and delivery a baby. But that's fictional!
Most of us would be panic stricken and pass out.
Karttikeya Mangalam, a final year electrical engineering student from IIT Kanpur is not most of us and is neither fictional!
Karttikeya was returning from Geneva to New Delhi via Moscow when his fellow passenger, Thomas who hailed from Netherlands began to have a medical situation. He was suffering from Type 1 Diabetes and had forgotten his insulin pump at the security checking in Moscow.
The situation was turning dire. The doctor on board informed the air hostess that he needed insulin or would succumb due to multiple organ failure!
Fortunately, the doctor himself was diabetic and had a pen like device to administer insulin. Although the insulin vial of Thomas and the pen did not fit, they decided to make do with it and Karttikeya returned to his seat.
After a while, the air hostess announced to the cabin that they were going to have an emergency landing in Afghanistan! Because Thomas had developed a serious complication as the doctor wasn’t able to adjust the pin
What Karttikeya did now was absolutely commendable!
He asked for the Pen to check what was wrong. He also asked for the in flight Wi Fi connection to check the Pen’s design on the internet. He found a diagram of the Pen that detailed how every part fit with each other!
He kept his cool and started dismantling the Pen methodically. He found that the Pen had only 12 parts whereas the drawing showed 13! A spring, like the ones found in ball pens was missing that would push the needle further! He immediately searched for it all around the place, but did not find any. So he instructed the air hostess to ask around for a ball point pen.
They finally obtained a few pens and on testing all, he found one spring that would fit the Insulin Pen. He immediately put back the Pen together with the spring and gave it to the doctor to inject the insulin. In a short while, Thomas’ blood sugar level stopped raising! He eventually regained consciousness and was stable!
