Let present ages be F and S

F = 3S

F-5 + S-5 = 3S-5+ S-5 = 4S - 10 = 50

Therefore S = 60/4 = 15

F = 3S = 45

Answer:

Given:

Present age of father is3 times the present age of son. 5years ago the sum of their ages was 50.

To Find:

We need to find the present age of son and father.

Solution:

Let Present age of son = x

and Present age of father = 3x

5 years ago,

Age of son = x - 5

Age of father = 3x - 5

According to the question,

x - 5 + 3x - 5 = 50

4x - 10 = 50

4x = 50 + 10

4x = 60

x = 60/4

x = 15

Therefore present age of son = x years which is 15 years and age of father = 3x which is 3 × 15 = 45 years.

Hence, present age of son is 15 years and present age of father is 45 years.
