The ratio of the present ages of Veena and Simi = 2:5

4 years from now, the ratio of their ages will be 1:2

To find:

Their present ages

Solution:

Since the ratio of the present ages of Veena and Simi are 2:5,

So we can say that "2x" years is the present age of Veena and "5x" years is the present age of Simi.

After 4 years,

Veena' age = [2x + 4] years

Simi's age = [5x + 4] years

After 4 years the new ratio of their ages becomes 1:2, so we can form an equation as,

\frac{2x\:+\:4}{5x\:+\:4} =  \frac{1}{2}

⇒ 2 [2x + 4] = 5x + 4

⇒ 4x + 8 = 5x + 4

⇒ 8 - 4 = 5x - 4x

⇒ x = 4

Thus,

The present age of Veena = 2x = 2 × 4 = 8 years

The present age of Simi = 5x = 5 × 4 = 20 years
