Solution :

Let the initial population be X .

then , population after n years = X *  [ 1 - (20/100) ]^{n}

then , according to the question ,

  10240 = X * (4/5) * (4/5) * (4/5)

→ X = ( 10240 * 5 * 5 * 5 ) / ( 4 * 4 * 4 )

→ X = 20000

The population of the town before 3 years was 20000
