We celebrate our Independence day on 15th August in 2016 with a lot of joy and happiness in the air as well as in each of our eyes and hearts.  It's our 70th Independence day since 1947.  It is a great feeling to be a citizen of an Independent republic.

On this occasion it is imperative that we remember the sacrifices of our great national heroes during the long independence struggle.
Their non-violent, non-cooperative, freedom fight won acclaim all over the world.  Many countries could get their Independence afterwards following India.

Also, we see that Independence, freedom and right to do one's choice is given the greatest importance in the most advanced countries including the USA.  Thus we have to thank our freedom fighters for having been the cause for the gift that the world values the most.  Many freedom fighters lived an ideal and model life after independence.

It's 70 years now already.  India was very poor and unorganized.  India faced tough hurdles to come to where it is now.  There were many internal struggles for unity in diversity, peace.  There were many hits by selfish people from inside.  There were many invasions on the land on the borders, during which we lost a lot of land.  There were a lot of regional, caste, language and religious barriers for progress.  A lot of good things happened and bad things too along with them.  Now people of India are more educated and knowledgeable and are probably on a progress path that the freedom fighters had hoped for.

We must pay our respectful tributes to them with full-hearted dedication and gratitude.  While it may seem that patriotism is not a money-earning activity, still it's our inherent duty that we spend a few minutes to stand in silence and pray like we do (or did) for our forefathers.

In the seventy years there has been progress on many accounts.  Now Indians are on the world map.  Many Indians have earned a name for themselves and for India.  However, there are other countries which have progressed far better than India in the last four decades.  India has not been able to gain sufficient friendship from its neighbours.  Indian economy is dependent badly on the world economy.  Indian borders are not safe.  India is still the country of poor, illiterate, dirty and disease prone in the eyes of the developed world.  In the United Nations India has many supporters but India cannot get to any important position that has some power and responsibility.  India has a lot of foreign debt, export-import gap and suffers from natural calamities every year.  India lags behind many smaller countries in the fields of economy, business, tourism, sports etc.  In the field of space, India has done good.  India has shown tolerance, perhaps a little too much, to many disturbances from outside.

Thus in summary, India after independence has made some progress.  Yet India still needs to accelerate its progress to be on par with other nations.  India needs to show its power, like the way the United States does now and then, to show that it is a boss, in the fields it is.
