To begin with the Pre-historic art, the art before writing, lets us talk about the artists of the period.

Who were They?
Cro- Magnon

They lived in caves when it was cold.
Hunted animals for food, clothing and shelter.
The caves in the northern part of Spain, Altamira had numerous such paintings of this period.
Such cave paintings are found all over the world. Western Europe, Sothern France, and Northern Spain have reminiscents of such stone wall paintings.
Rock paintings have been found to include line drawings in charcoal and red ochre, painted images and negative images, which were formed by painting the rock area around an object.
The subjects of the paintings were Aurochs- an ancient bull, horses, fish, Rhinocerous and bisons. Also, turtle, human hands marks that represented human calender.

Prehistoric period is made up of the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic ages. Shells with engravings on them, dating back 500,000 years are attributed to the Homo Erectus.

Cave painting and other types of rock art found during excavations are said to be of the Mesolithic era. Artwork made of beads and other small colourful items are also said to belong to this age.

Artefacts found from the Indus Valley civilisation are classic examples of prehistoric art. Most artwork of this period were of high quality and followed a geometric disposition.
