The British established presidencies to create ease for their trade. They wanted to make their trade efficient.

The presidencies were:

(i) Bombay Presidency.

(ii) Calcutta Presidency.

(iii) Madras Presidency.

These were established to the coastal areas, which made overseas trade easier and quicker.

Britishers built the three presidency cities in India during their rule and these are Bombay presidency (established in 1687), Calcutta presidency (established in 1690) and Madras Presidency (established in 1640).

These presidencies were multi-functional and included with army camp, ports, educational institutions, museums, libraries and etc.

Amid the time of Company rule in India between 1757 to 1858, the Company step by step procured sovereignty over India, presently called Presidencies.
