Pressure is produced when a force acts on an object. An object exerts force on another object by making contact with it or by touching it. If we push hard on a piece of wood with our thumb, the thumb does not go into the wood. But if we push a drawing pin into the wood with the same force of our thumb, the drawing pin goes into the wood. It so happens that in the latter case, the force gets concentrated over a small area of the tip of the drawing pin as compared to the large area of the thumb in the former case. Thus, the pressure varies directly as the magnitude of the force and inversely as the area over which the force acts. Larger the surface area, smaller is the pressure produced by a given force. The tractors used to plough the fields have unusually broad tyres.Which of the following provides the best explanation for the same? asset
