A prospective, multicentre, open study with two intervention groups was carried out in France, with the collaboration of family paediatricians. Three-hundred paediatricians were randomly selected from the 1200 paediatricians practicing in France and were invited by letter to participate in the study; 166 accepted. Infants aged between 4 and 6 months of age who needed follow-on formula were enroled by 166 paediatricians scattered all over the French territory, after informed written consent was obtained from parents. Inclusion criteria were birth weight between 2 and 4.5 kg and no history of neonatal or digestive disorders. Infants who had an immune deficiency were excluded. Because of the pilot nature of the study and in line with the proposal by participating family paediatricians, an open study design was applied. This study was registered with the French Medical Council to the National Consultative Committee on Data Processing in Biomedical Research.
