In the story, Mr. Gupta comes across a young English girl hailing from a poor family . Her mother wants to meet an Indian who would provides her with some news about her son working as a soldier in India . When the woman falls ill , the girl forces the Indian to look at the crystal ring and tell her mother a lie, claiming that her son was alive and well . This false claim, however, led to her recovery . When Maggie's brother dies in the war, the girl gives a shilling to the Indian to buy flowers to be placed on the brothers grave . The main theme of the stories about the bonds of relationship - relationship between Maggie and her mother, relationship between Frank and his mother , the attachment of Maggie to her brother as well as the relation between the narrator and the impoverished English family .
In the course of the story, The author hints at the superstitious beliefs of the whites, as well as their misgivings about India .
The author has been able to describe the different characters vividly. When the girl offers the narrator a shilling to buy flowers to be laid on the grave of her brother , narrator is touched by the sacrifice of her hard earned money. He accept the money just to console the girl.
