Metabolites can be divided into two groups: those produced during the growth phase of the organism, calledprimary metabolites and those produced during the stationary phase, called secondary metabolites. Some examples of primary metabolites are ethanol, citric acid, glutamic acid, lysine, vitamins and polysaccharides
