The principle behind steam distillation is very simple. It is a way of separating miscible liquid based on their volatilities. The boiling point of the products are minimized, permitting the constituents to be vaporised. The vapor pressure exerted by the liquids differ in strength which is a function of temperature.

The principle behind the steam distillation process is that when the heating of a mixture of two or more immiscible liquids takes place, the vapour pressure exerted by the system increases. This mixture gets heated further by pa$sing more steam, which continues to pa$s through the matter, evaporating the mixture.
