Hey there!

I guess your question to be : Proability of picking a non defective items sample is 7/12 find the proability of picking a item which is defective.

Given, Probability of picking a item which is not defective = 7/12 .

We know,
If P(A) is the probability of happening of an event A , then Probability of an event B which happens if A doesn't happen is P(A') or P(B)

then, P(A) + P(A') = 1 .

Here,

P ( Not a defective item ) = 7/12 .

Let the probability of picking a defective item be " x " .

P ( A defective item) = x.

Now,
P ( not a defective ) + P ( defective) = 1

7/12 + x = 1 .

x = 1-7/12 = 5/12 .

Therefore, Probability of picking a item which is defective is 5/12 .
