Petroleum is referred to as 'black gold' because when crude oil is extracted from the land it is black in colour. People call it gold because of its oils and value. It is very difficult to find. Even its extraction is expensive. Petroleum, when crude oil is extracted  it is  jet black before purification but after purification, it turns golden in color; therefore, it's tagged as Gold .When it comes out of the ground and the term 'Gold' for of its rarity and utility associated with it.
