In the fifth period of the periodic table, one element each is present from the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals (2 in all), one element each in groups 3-12 (transition metals) (10 in all), one element from group 13, 14, 15 ,16, 17 (halogens) and 18(noble gases), (6 in all).

So, in all 2+10+6 = 18 elements are present in period 5.

Indicating that the 5th period is a full or complete period.
