Problem 8:
The coefficient of static friction between mass m1 and the supporting board is 0.30, while the
coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.16.
- What is the minimum value of m1 which will keep the system from starting to move?
- What value of m1 will keep the system moving at constant speed?

Answer:

Starting Force = CoeffStatic Friction x M1 x g

= 3 M1

MINIMUM FRICTION OPPOSING THE MOTION WHILE IN MOTION DROPS TO 1.6 M1 , BECAUSE KINETIC FRICTION IS LOWER BY 40 PERCENT.
