There are several problems, describing each one of these and their root cause is a subject of an independent research thesis.

1 Poor roads. The problem begins with road design itself. Civil design I.e. foundation as per the soil conditions, slope, drainage and construction as per design. Road architecture, road width to meet the capacity requirements, design of intersections and forward planning for road capacity.

2. Driving etiquette, we Indian culturally are not courteous to strangers. Same happens while driving. Drivers adopt me first principle. Therefore, cause traffic jams and dead lock. All over the world people drive one behind the other (in lanes) whereas in India people drive one besides the other (no lane dscipline). Therefore, you would hardly find and vehicle which does not have scratches on its sides.

3. Road Quality, Quality standards in construction and mmaintenance of roads. Roads are not constructed as per tender sspecifications, as everyone including the staff of tendering authority make money at the expsense of road users.

4. Vehicle Maintenance, Indians spend much less on preventive maintenance (PM), they go to workshops only when the vehicle breaks down. This particularly is true for owner driven commercial vehicles. Any PM expenditure is considered extravagance and loss of profit.

There are several other issues as well, but if we are able address the four above, it would help Indian roads and traffic to become world-lass.

Most Indian roads are unsafe (42.65%) and are not suitable for the use of vehicle traffic. The poor maintenance of the roads disturbs the problem especially in the rainy season. According to an estimate, there is a loss of rupees per year. It increases the time of traffic, crowds and pollution and road accidents.

(i) Road network is inadequate in India. (ii) About half of the roads are unmetalled and this limits their usage during the rainy season. (iii) The roadways are highly congested in cities. (iv) Most of the bridges are old and narrow.
