PROBLEM 1:

Given:

The Science Club collected bottles for every class in Grade Six for their fundraising project, Section A collected 9 1/2 kg, Section B 7 1/3 kg, Section C 8 3/4 kg of bottles. What is the average collection of bottles per section?

To find:

What is the average collection of bottles per section?

Solution:

The collection of bottles from each section are as follows:

Section A → 9\frac{1}{2} \:kg = \frac{19}{2}\:kg

Section B → 7\frac{1}{3} \:kg = \frac{22}{3}\:kg

Section C → 8\frac{3}{4} \:kg = \frac{35}{4}\:kg

No. of sections(i.e., A, B & C) = 3

We know,

\boxed{\bold{Average = \frac{Sum \:of\:observations}{No. \:of\: observations} }}

Therefore,

The average collection of bottles per section is,

= \frac{Sum\:of\:quantity\:of\:bottles \:collected}{No. \:of \:sections}

= \frac{\bigg{\frac{19}{2} \:+\:\frac{22}{3} \:+\:\frac{35}{4}} }{\bigg{3}}

= \:\bigg{\frac{\bigg{\frac{114 \:+\:88\:+\:105}{12}} }{3}}

= \:\bigg{\frac{\bigg{\frac{307}{12}} }{3}}

= \: \frac{307}{36}

=\bold{8\frac{19}{36}}\:kg }

Thus, the average collection of bottles per section is\underline{\bold{8\frac{19}{36}}\:kg }}.

PROBLEM 2:

Given:

Ms. Padayhag made 300 cookies. She sold 3/4 of it. She gave 1/3 of the remainder to her sister and equally shared the rest with her 5 friends. How many cookies did each of her friends get?

To find:

How many cookies did each of her friends get?

Solution:

Total no. of cookies Ms. Padayhag made = 300

She sold 3/4 of it

i.e., No. of cookies she sold = \frac{3}{4} \times 300 = 225

∴ The remaining no. of cookies after selling = 300 - 225 = 75

She gave 1/3 of the remainder to her sister

i.e., No. of cookies she gave to her sister = \frac{1}{3} \times 75 = 25

∴ The remaining no. of cookies after giving to sister = 75 - 25 = 50

She equally shared the rest with her 5 friends

i.e., No. of cookies she equally distributed = \frac{50}{5}  = 10

∴ Each of her friends gets = 10 cookies

Thus, each of her friends gets → 10 cookies.
