● India is a diverse country.
● There are many beautiful cities in India.
● Some are beautiful because of their historical buildings, whereas others are beautiful because of their modern architecture. Some cities are beautiful because they are in the mountain valleys, where as some are beautiful, because of the beautiful and warm smiles of people.
● Here, I would like to talk about Chandigarh, which is also known as ‘The City Beautiful’
● It was designed by the French architect Le Corbusier.
● It is the first planned city of India after independence.
● Chandigarh is the cleanest and the happiest city of India according to two different surveys held in 2010 and 2015.
● It is also the first smokefree city in the country.
● It is a union territory and is also the capital of two states Punjab and Haryana.
● The Rock Garden in Chandigarh is a masterpiece out of waste material.
● Sukhna lake, is the biggest manmade lake. It is a beautiful place for the people to enjoy with their families.
● The sector 17 market is a shopper’s paradise.
● The Rose Garden is Asia’s largest garden
● The city has 47 sectors.
● Each sector has residential and commercial zones
● The roads are designed and oriented in such a way that most of the time of the
day, they are under shade.
● There are huge parking areas inr the commercial zones so that the Parking
problems don’t create a havoc on the main roads.
● The Parking lanes are as broad as the main roads.
● So, you see, while the city was planned in 1952, it is still the most well planned
and beautiful cities of India
The main problems faced by City Beautiful, Chandigarh are due to it not being a huge city, and yet being the joint capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana. There are two main issues here:
1. Too many bureaucrats
2. Limited infrastructure for growing population
The capital of any state has to house many government institutions, including the courts, secretariats, head offices and even government guest houses. Chandigarh being the capital of two states, is burdened with double the number of institutions. Having a high number of government officials is not a problem, but having a high percentage of people who wish to be labelled as ‘VIPs’ is the problem. The common man seems to get lost in the crowd of cars with red beacons on top, even though most of them are being used illegally. It is difficult to implement rules in Chandigarh, because almost everyone either claims to be a VIP or linked to one.
Additionally, many people come to Chandigarh in search of jobs or for education. As a result, the population of the city is increasing a lot faster than the development in infrastructure. It is unfortunate to see the roundabouts getting clogged with traffic during the peak hours. The air quality index is also deteriorating. Similarly, with a shortage of space within the city, the villages on the periphery have developed into modern slums. The population is putting immense pressure on the administration, in terms of providing health and education to all.
Constructing high rise buildings might temporarily mitigate the space issue, but it will destroy the heritage of the city, which is why the court has ruled against any such construction. To conclude, I feel that the biggest issue plaguing Chandigarh is its double capital status and its struggle to grow yet maintain the charm as envisioned by its chief architect and planner, Le Corbusier.
