A child-headed family or child-headed household is a family in which a minor (child or adolescent) has become the head of the household. Child-headed families are most common in Africa.

The absence of primary educators in a family leads to the eldest sibling to head the family depriving themselves of education and social life. This has found to affect the interaction of the child with the environment in mostly adverse ways.

The absence of a proper family tends to leave an impact and contributes differently to the development of the child.

Also, the absence of parents can make the adolescents easily vulnerable to the physical and psychological world during the period of high instability which can cause emotional instability.

Although most financial help comes from the government, charity and aid organizations like UNICEF, it still does not seem to have a beneficial effect on the emotional side of the children.
