Peasants were forced to grow commercial crops at very low prices to the British. They forcibly had to grow crops like indigo on their best lands and could no longer grow pulses there. As a result they could only earn a meagre income.
The British would trap the farmers once by providing loan. The poor farmers trapped in debt, couldn't repay it and had to render services to the government by fulfilling the orders.
Added to this was the additional tax paid by them to the government.
