During the colonial period, the British treated India and its goods to be easy economic development for the European empire. they treated raw materials as their property and bought it at a very cheap price, which was not sufficient enough for the mill workers to even have proper food once a day.
the cotton mill workers and the indigo plantations were the poorest of the lot, considering the pain and the hard work they put into getting in the good side of the british. But the 'traders' were just there to build an empire for their own needs and mainly, luxuries. they made India buy expensive british goods and loot india of its riches.
The cotton mill workers were often provoked to take loans with high interest from moneylenders, and unable to pay back, are driven to suicide. The Britished emphasized on growing cotton and indigo , because the plants grew only in wet and humid climate. the british forced the vegetable and fruit growing farmers to grow cotton, resulting a famine which the british did not care for
