The cultivators of ryoti mandatorily had to sign an agreement called satta.
Under this agreement the cultivators were then given loan at cheaper rates of interest to grow indigo.
The problem was that the cultivators wanted to grow rice on the lands but were enforced to grow indigo as British traded in it.
