Procedure 1. Record the least count of the given instrument. cm Main scale Vernier scale Movable jaw Fixed jaw Object Figure (9 : A pair of Vernier Callipers 2. Keeping the two jaws of the instrument together. Find the initial zero-error in the instrument. 3. Fix the given object lengthwise in between the two jaws of the instrument. 4. Record the main scale reading corresponding to the zero mark of the Vernier scale. 5. Read the coinciding division (1) of the Vernier scale (from 0 to 10) in line with any division on the main scale. 6. Record Vernier scale reading (V.S.R.) by multiplying 'n' with the least count. Record M.S.R. and V.S.R. in the given observation table and find the observed length of the object. 7. Subtract the initial zero-error with proper sign from the observed length to find the true length of the object. 8. Repeat the procedure by placing the object in between the jaws of the instrument to record another sets of observations, 9. Remove the object and fix it again between the two jaws of the instrument, thickness wise and repeat the above procedure to determine the diameter of the object.
