i) Hand-picking - Matured cotton bolls are generally picked by hand and dried. This process is

called hand-picking.

ii) Ginning - The process of separating cotton fibres from cotton seeds. Traditionally, ginning

used to be done by hand but these days machines called double roller cotton ginning machines

are widely in use.

iii) Spinning - The process of twisting fibre together to form yarn is called spinning.

Uses of cotton- It is used for making towels, curtains, bed sheets etc.

b) Jute - Jute fibre is obtained from the stem of the jute plant. Jute is

cultivated in the rainy season. It grows best in alluvial soil. Some jute

producing Indian states are Bihar, Assam and West Bengal.

i) Harvesting - The plant is harvested during its flowering stage.

ii) Retting - The stems of these harvested plants are tied in bundles and then

soaked in water for few days.

iii) Spinning - The process of twisting fibre together to form yarn is called spinning.

Uses - Jute is used mainly for making gunny bags, shopping bags, ropes, carpets etc.
