Answer:

Metamorphosis is a biological process by which an animal physically develops after birth or hatching, involving a conspicuous and relatively abrupt change in the animal's body structure through cell growth and differentiation.

Metamorphosis occurs in many organisms, but only a few of them are easily observable by city dwellers.

The Arthropods have great numbers of species where this is involved. Of vertebrates, amphibians are the main organisms where this transition happens. Many insects or amphibians make the transition from aquatic larvae to terrestrial or avian adulthood. (eg. Tadpoles to frogs or Dragonfly nymphs to Dragonflies.)

Marine species may change from mobile to sedentary or the reverse.
