Lactate reacts with oxidized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) to form pyruvate, reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), and a proton (H+). Under physiological condition, the concentration of lactate is ~10-fold that of pyruvate.
