EXPERIMENT TO SHOW THAT CURRENT CARRYING WIRE PRODUCES MAGNETIC FIELD AROUND IT
Procedure
take a thick insulated copper wire and fix it in such a way that the portion of wire is in north south direction. a plotting compass is well placed under the wire. the two ends of wires are connected to a battery through a switch. when no current is flowing in the wire the compass needle is parallel to the wire and points in the north south direction.
on passing the current through wire by pressing the switch we will find that the compass needle is reflected from its north south position. and when the current is switched off the compass needle returns to its original position.
Conclusion
the deflection of compass needle by current carrying wire shows that an electric current produces a magnetic field around it.
