When sodium hydride (NaH) deprotonates alcohols to give alkoxides and hydrogen gas bubbles away and doesn't interfere with the reaction.

When Phenol reacts with Sodium hydride ,it forms phenolate and this phenolate reacts with (CH3)CCl and forms a new ether compound tert-butylbenzene [C6H5-O-C(CH3)3 ]

This process is known as williamson ether synthesis reaction.
