Undoubtedly, after independence India had made a tremendous progress. India made her mark in science and technology, large and small industries, agriculture, transport, communication and trade. Before independence India had followed the policy of importing things from many foreign countries. Now, it has changed a lot in industrial areas as exporting goods to other developing countries. The pace of progress has been steadily improving. As a result our per-capita income has been rising. This helps in raising the standard of living of the people.

However, despite so much progress, India is still a poor country. Frequent price rise has caused difficulties for the middle class and the poor. It mostly affected people who live in country side. Even in cities, slums settlements tell their own tale. Beggars and semi-clad children picking rags on heaps of garbage tell a real tale of the country. There are acute problems of insufficient housing units, unemployment, illiteracy, clean drinking water etc. In many villages people do not have proper sanitary facilities too. Many children are forced to child labor instead of getting proper education.

Undoubtedly, we can say that there is a strange mixture of richness and poverty. The rich have grown richer day by day, while the poor have been faced with the challenge of survival itself. There are many who live below poverty line. The economic position is really grim in the rural side due to unemployment.

There are much dissimilarity between the living condition of rich and the poor. Unavoidably we can say population growth is also a main problem. In this way poverty, corruption economic disparities are the evil that have become graver. On the other hand, India is the sixth nation as a nuclear power yet it is a country where appalling poverty still is prevalent among masses.
