Consumer Awareness:

A Consumer is a buyer of a product manufactured by a Company.

1. Objective → Create Awareness among Consumers about their Rights. This will minimize their chance of being exploited in the Market Place.

2. Consumers are scattered, unorganized and many of them are illiterate. Traders, Money-lenders, Service-providers exploit them. Traders generally tell that Buyers should be aware of the product before buying them and shun their responsibility after sales. Consumer Awareness allows Consumer to get informed about products before purchasing them so that the buyer can take Right Decisions and Choice. Hence, The need for Consumer Awareness and Satisfaction has been widely accepted all over the World.

3. This Program makes the Consumer aware of the Maximum Retail Price, Fair Prize Shops and their Rights and Duties. World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated on 15th March every year.

4. Consumer Court has led the Manufacturers to label their Products with right ingredients so that Consumer can be aware of the information. They ensure a fair comparison between products. They prevent misleading messages.

5. In 1986, Indian Government passed the COPRA Act (Consumer Protection Act). The 'Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution' has started 'Jago Grahak Jago' program in 2005. Consumer Forums are set-up at District Level, State Level and National Level - according to the value of the Goods purchased.

6. Some Quality Standard Marks issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards for Consumer Protection are -

  • BEE Star label mark
  • Handloom
  • Woolmark
  • Silkmark
  • FPO mark
  • FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India)

Problems with Consumer Movement are -

  • Consumer Redressal Process is difficult, expensive and time-consuming.
  • Existing Laws are not clear on the issue of Compensation to Consumers.
  • Law Enforcement in unorganized sector is weak.
  • Traders do not issue 'Cash Memos.'
