double - displacement reaction occurs when parts of two ionic compounds are exchanged, making two new compounds.
A characteristic of a double - displacement equation is that there are two compounds as reactants and two different compounds as products.
EXAMPLES :
We have an acidic solution of HCl.
Lets write the equation of reaction with HCl as follows :
HCl (aq) + NaOH (aq) —> NaCl (aq) + H₂O (l)
This is a double displacement reaction.
Another example could be a solid of Calcium Carbonate with sodium hydroxide.
The reaction is as follows :
CaCO₃(s) + 2NaOH (aq) —> Na₂CO₃ (aq) + Ca(OH)₂ (aq)
This is an example of a double displacement reaction
