Hybridization refers to mixing of atomic orbitals .it states that atomic orbitals of almost equal energies combine to form a new set of equivalent orbitals known as hybrid orbitals. Promotion of electrons is not essential prior to hybridization. this means that for hybridization to take place, it is not necessary that the electrons should be excited and promoted to higher energy level. electrons when excited jump to higher energy level. so this is not necessary before hybridization takes place.
