Answer: Actually platinum does turn black. It requires hydrogen gas and hydrochloric acid and a trace of ammonia to make black platinum, but it can be done. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology uses a hydrogen/platinum black electrode as the standard reference for Zero Voltage.
