Explanation:The reaction is commonly known as hydoxylation of alkene. The common reagent is alkaline KMnO4. Other reagents can also be used for this purpose such as OsO4 in presence of base or H2O2 in presence of base.Using alkaline potassium permanganate(VII) produces a colour change from clear deep purple to clear green; acidic potassium manganate(VII) turns clear colourless. This is the test used to distinguish between alkanes and alkenes.
