Answer:

Balanced equation is :

2MnO₄- (aq) + H₂O + Br- (aq) → 2MnO₂ (s) + BrO3- (aq) + 2OH-

Explanation:

By half reaction method :

Refer to the attachments :) And go through these steps for better understanding.

Step 1 :

  • We have identify elements undergoing oxidation and reduction.

Step 2 :

  • We have break the equations in two halves.
  1. Oxidation half .
  2. Reduction half.

Step 3 :

  • Balanced the half equations.

Oxidation half :

  • For balancing oxygen we have added 3H₂O molecule to the opposite side means in L.H.S, for hydrogen we have added 6H+ ions to R.H.S And, for balancing charge we have added 6 e- to the R.H.S.

Reduction half :

  • For balancing oxygen we have added 2H₂O molecule to the opposite side means in R.H.S, for hydrogen we have added 4H+ ions to L.H.S And, for balancing charge we have added 3 e- to the L.H.S.

Step 4 :

  • For equalising number of electrons we have multipled 2 to the reduction half equation. So, that when we add the two halves such that e- in two halves gets cancelled.

Equation is in basic medium so next step .

Step 5 :

  • For basic medium we have add 2OH - to both sides.

Then,

We have balanced the equation!
