Properties of Addition
Commutative property: The sum of two addends remains the same even if
their order is changed.
Consider the numbers 24,516 and 60,789.
24,516 + 60,789 = 85,305
60,789 + 24,516 = 85,305
So, 24,516 + 60,789 = 60,789 + 24,516
Associative property: When adding three or more addends, the sum always
remains the same even if the grouping of the addends is changed.
Consider the numbers 33,521, 6,058, and 22,889.
Group the first two addends together. Add their sum to the third addend.
(33,521 + 6,058) + 22,889 = 39,579 + 22,889 = 62,468
Group the last two addends together. Add their sum to the first addend.
33,521 + (6,058 + 22,889) = 33,521 + 28,947 = 62,468
So, (33,521 +6,058) + 22,889 = 33,521 + (6,058 + 22,889)
Identity property: The sum of any number and O is the number itself.
79,780 + 0 = 79,780
0 + 49,292 = 49,292
