Properties of colloids:

A colloid is a heterogeneous mixture.

  • The size of the solute particles in a colloid is bigger than in a solution, but smaller than in a suspension. They are between 1 nm and 1000 nm in diameter.

  • The solute particles present in a colloidal solution cannot be seen even with a microscope.

  • As the size of the particles present in colloids is quite large, they scatter the beam of light passing through them.

  • The solute particles of a colloid cannot be filtered using a filter paper.

  • Colloids are quite stable. Their particles do not settle down when left undisturbed.

Properties:-

1. It is a heterogeneous solution but appears to be homogeneous.

2. The particle size of solute is 1 nm - 1000 nm.

( {10}^{ - 9} - {10}^{ - 6} )

3. The components scatter light and shows Tyndall effect
