Let's take the example of H2 and O2.
H2 burns and O2 supports burning, whereas when we combine them chemically they form H2O (compound), which can stop burning.
If we combine them physically (mixture) they don't react and their physical property remains the same until we don't combine them chemically.

Pure elements are Substances which are made up of only one kind of atom. Air is a mixture of element and compound whereas alcohol in water is a mixture of compounds. CO2 is a pure compound and not an element.
