Physical properties:
1. Like ordinary water(H2O), heavy water is a colourless, odourless and tasteless mobile liquid.
2. Heavy water(mass:20), on having greater mass than water(mass:18). Therefore some physical constants like boiling point, freezing point, specific heat, density, viscosity, temperature of maximum density and latent heat of vaporization are greater for Heavy water than of water.
3. But dielectric constant for heavy water is less than that of water. Hence ionic compounds like Nacl etc.. are less soluble in heavy water than in water.
Chemical Properties:
1. Heavy water can participate in all the chemical reactions in which water can participate
2. Both H2O and D2O have same chemical properties but the difference is that D2O has less reactivity.
3. Less reactivity of D2O is due to greater dissociation energy of O-D bond than that of O-H bond.
