Answer:

Methanol is a colourless liquid that boils at 64.96 °C (148.93 °F) and solidifies at −93.9 °C (−137 °F). It forms explosive mixtures with air and burns with a nonluminous flame. It is completely miscible in water.

Answer:

Methanol is the simplest alcohol with molecular formula CH3OH. It is also called as methyl alcohol, wood alcohol, wood naphtha or wood spirit. It is a light, volatile, colorless, flammable liquid.

It is used as an antifreeze, solvent, fuel, and as a denaturant for ethanol. It is also used for producing bio-diesel via trans-esterification reaction.

THE PROPERTIES OF ETHONOL

  • Ethanol is a colorless liquid having a pleasant smell and a burning taste
  • It is a volatile liquid having a low boiling point of 78o C (351 K)
  • It is miscible with water in all proportions
  • Ethanol does not contain any ions, as it is a covalent compound and has no effect on litmus paper
  • The boiling point of alcohols are, in general, much higher than the corresponding alkanes. This is because in alcohols there is intermolecular association of a large number of molecules due to Hydrogen bonding which is absent in alkanes
